There are endless perks to city living, but sometimes only the countryside will do…
We paid a visit to Lookout Farm in Natick, run by the Belkin family, to get our Fall fix.
Lookout Farm, established in 1651, is one of the oldest continuously working farms in the United States and upon arrival it wasn’t hard to see why. With over 180 acres of orchards, Lookout offers an endless variety of apples, strawberries, peaches, pears and pumpkins from May through October.
The real beauty of Lookout isn’t just the delicious fruit – it’s the blue and white trains that take you through the orchards; the amazing farm shop selling homemade fruit butters, popcorn, pies and cider; the incredible hospitality of every farm employee you meet, and last but not least, the enormous play area beyond the apple trees.
On weekends there’s face painting, balloon twisting and live music shows for the kids as well as farm animals, a bouncy house, hay rides and a maze. You could spend three hours here without seeing an apple and still be having one of the best family days out of the year.
Insider Tip for Next Year: Marianne Kelly, one of the farm managers, told us that many families take advantage of the Season Pass and put their nannies’ names down just to come to the play area alone – yes, it really is that good.
When to Go
Now! The farm has over 25,000 pumpkins and eleven varieties of apple throughout the season. Go on a weekend for all the entertainment bells and whistles or go on a weekday to avoid the crowds and ride the train to the little ones’ heart’s content.
